Lift ("the app", "we", "us") is a workout tracking app. This page explains what information the app collects, how it's used, and how you can delete it.
Information We Collect
You can use the app without creating an account: on first launch the app starts an anonymous guest session and stores your workout data against it. Creating an account is optional and simply links that data to an email so you can sign in on another device. Depending on how you use the app, we store:
- Account information (only if you create an account): the email address and display name you sign up with, and a securely hashed version of your password (we never store or have access to your plain-text password).
- Workout data: the exercises, sets, reps, and weights you log, your workout history, and any workout routines/templates you create.
- Goal data: your weekly workout goal.
- Optional getting-started answers: what you choose in the questions shown when you first open the app: your gender (or that you prefer not to say), your training goals, the body areas you want to focus on, and how you heard about Lift. These are picked from fixed lists and stored with your Lift session/account. We do not currently use these answers for analytics or to personalize the app. They are deleted with your account. You can choose Skip personal questions to leave these unanswered and set only your weekly workout goal. Skipping clears any personal answers you selected during that setup; no placeholder personal answers are saved.
- Device identifier: on iPhone and iPad, Apple's identifier for vendor — an ID for your device shared by apps from the same developer, with different values for other developers. We use it to tell whether a device has already used its free access period, so that period cannot be restarted simply by deleting your Lift data. It is not an advertising identifier, it is never used to track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and we do not share it with TypeSafe AI. Its value changes after you remove all apps from the same developer and then reinstall one of them.
- Purchase information: an Apple subscription transaction identifier, subscription status, renewal preference, expiration date, and a random identifier linking a purchase to your Lift session. If we give your account free lifetime access, we record when it was given and when you accepted it in the app. Apple processes payment; we do not receive your card or bank details.
- Usage information: the calendar days on which the app contacts our servers, the Lift version and platform (such as iOS) in use that day, and when a guest session was turned into an account. We record at most one entry per day, and never your location, contacts, or activity in other apps.
How We Use Your Information
Except for the stored getting-started answers described above, your data is used to provide the app's features: tracking your workouts and computing your stats and streaks. We also use it, together with the usage information above, to understand how Lift is used and to improve it: for example, how many people return each week, which features they use, and how many continue after the free period. That analysis is done by us, on our own servers. We do not run ads, do not use third-party analytics or advertising tracking SDKs, and do not sell your data. We exchange purchase identifiers and signed transaction information with Apple to verify subscriptions, restore purchases, and process renewals or refunds.
AI Features and Your Choices
Lift uses TypeSafe AI, a third-party AI provider, to suggest routine names, rank exercise alternatives, and provide Progression Coach suggestions. Routine naming and exercise alternatives use AI automatically when you use those features, including with custom exercises. They do not have separate permission prompts or on/off settings. Progression Coach has its own permission and is off until you opt in. Before you enable it, the app explains what will be sent and asks you to allow it. You can turn the Coach on or off in Settings.
- AI routine names: when Lift suggests a routine name, it sends the exercise names, body parts, and equipment types in that routine or workout to TypeSafe AI. This includes custom exercise names. It does not send your sets, weights, reps, or workout history for this feature. You can edit the suggested name or type your own; doing so does not recall an AI request already sent.
- AI exercise alternatives: when you open Pick Alternate, Lift can send the name, body part, and equipment type of the exercise you want to replace and of possible substitutes, including custom exercises, to TypeSafe AI to rank alternatives. It does not send your sets, weights, reps, or workout history for this feature. Non-AI suggestions are used if the AI provider is unavailable or does not return a usable result.
- Progression Coach: if enabled, Lift sends the names, body parts, and equipment types of the exercises being coached, including custom exercises, and their completed sets from up to the last three sessions: weights, reps, effort marks (such as a struggle), session order, and how many days ago each session took place. TypeSafe AI uses this fitness information to suggest your next weight and reps. Nothing changes in your workout unless you apply a suggestion.
Keeping the Coach off prevents sharing recent sets for Coach suggestions; it does not turn off routine naming or exercise alternatives. You can keep using workout logging without enabling the Coach.
Lift sends these requests through its servers. It does not add your email, display name, Lift account ID, Lift sign-in token, device identifier, or stored exercise IDs to the data sent to TypeSafe AI. The Coach uses temporary labels within each request to match answers to exercises. Custom exercise names are sent as entered, so any personal information you put in those names is also shared when they are included in a relevant AI request. Do not put personal information in custom exercise names.
Turning the Coach off stops future sharing for Coach suggestions. It cannot recall a request already in progress and does not delete information TypeSafe AI has already received. The alternates you pick are saved with your workout and used only to list them first next time.
TypeSafe's privacy policy states that it does not train or fine-tune AI models on submitted inputs and may share those inputs with its service providers. TypeSafe retains personal data for as long as reasonably necessary to provide its services or support its business purposes. Its policy describes deletion or de-identification upon request when the data is no longer reasonably necessary, subject to legal retention requirements; it does not give a fixed retention period. Deleting your Lift account does not itself delete data already sent to TypeSafe.
Data Retention & Deletion
Your account and workout data are retained for as long as your account exists. The limited records retained after deletion are described below. You can permanently delete your account, profile, and workout data at any time from within the app, under Profile → Settings → Delete Account. Guests can use Settings → Delete Guest Data. Deletion is immediate and irreversible, and removes your workout history, templates, and settings from our servers.
Deleting Lift data does not cancel an Apple subscription. Cancel it in your Apple Account subscription settings to stop future charges. After deletion, we retain the subscription transaction identifier and status without a Lift account link so an existing purchase can be restored and verified. Apple retains its own purchase records under its privacy policy. Subscription expiry does not automatically delete your workout data.
We also retain the device identifier and the date its free access period started in a separate record without a Lift account link. Deleting an account or guest data does not remove that record, so deletion does not restart the device's free access period.
Data Security
Passwords are hashed with bcrypt and never stored in plain text. All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted with HTTPS.
Children's Privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same URL with a new effective date.
